Broken wheat or Cracked wheat or Dalia is made by milling whole raw wheat grain coarsely. Broken wheat is a good dietary supplement. It has a hearty, warm aroma and a delightful grainy taste. It is nutty and chewy and be served with salad, curries, or just on its own. I have made a speedy and simple meatball curry with seasoned broken wheat. A perfect summer lunch or dinner and the best way to skip rice or bread.

Ingredients :
250gms Ground Beef
2 and 1/2 cup Broken Wheat (Dalia)
4 Cups Water (for broken wheat)
3 Onions, finely Chopped (for meatballs, curry, and broken wheat)
2 Tomatoes, finely chopped (curry and broken wheat)
2 Garlic cloves and a small piece of Ginger (or ginger-garlic paste)
3 Red chilies or green (for curry and broken wheat)
3tbsp Bread Crumbs (for meatballs, I have used wheat bread crumbs)
1 Egg (for the meatballs)
2tbsp Cooking cream (for the meatball curry, optional)
Seasoning (salt, black pepper, chili flakes, cumin powder, curry powder (optional), and lemon juice)
Garnish (coriander/cilantro and red chili flakes)
Recipe :
- Prepare Broken Wheat: Heat 2tbsp oil, 1 chopped onions, 1 chopped red chili, 1 chopped garlic clove and cook until soft and translucent. Add 1 chopped tomato, salt, 1tbsp chili flakes, 1/2tbsp black pepper, 1tbsp lemon juice and cook the paste well. To this add broken wheat (dry) and give it a good stir and cook for minute, for a nice roasted aroma. Add water and let it cook for about 20 minutes or until the broken wheat is soft and chewy. Once done add handful chopped cilantro/coriander for the aroma.
- Prepare Meat Balls: In a bowl add ground beef, bread crumbs, 1 chopped onion, 1 chopped red chili, 1tsp black pepper, 1tsp ginger-garlic paste, 1tsp chili flakes, 1 beaten egg, handful chopped coriander/cilantro, and a dash of lemon juice and oil. Mix well with your hand and make small round balls and shallow fry all side for at least 10 minutes or until cooked.
- Prepare Curry: In a sauce pan add oil, 1 chopped onion, 1 chopped red chili, chopped garlic and ginger (or ginger-garlic paste). Cook until onions are translucent and soft. Add 1 chopped tomato, salt, 1tsp black pepper, 1tsp cumin powder,1tsp red chili flakes, 1tsp curry powder and mix all well. Cook until the sauce is mushy (you can add a dash of water for cooking.
- Add the meat balls to the curry/sauce and cook for 5 minutes. Add cooking cream for the thickness at the end. Garnish with chopped cilantro/coriander.
Serve the broken wheat and meatball curry with a green salad on the side or just as it is. It may look too lengthy, but trust me when you cook the broken wheat and the curry simultaneously at the same time it is not more than 30 mins.
